AVENUE participates at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan for the Road Safety Practices
28th to August 8th 2015 in Japan
AVENUE, R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” and the global initiative “Scouting for Global Road Safety” we are welcomed with great enthusiasm at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) which took place from July 28th to August 8th 2015 in Japan. The Road Safety Institute participated as a partner of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) under the auspices of the United Nations, and was kindly hosted by the Scouts Association of Japan (SAJ). Its major objective was to inform young people about road safety issues and also to conduct a major research initiative on their road safety and driving attitudes and behaviors.
After the WSJ in Sweden, the U.N. Global R.S. week in Geneva and the Canada MOOT, R.S.I. participates for the fourth time in such a significant international event. In Japan, 35,000 Scouts aged 14 to 18 years from 150 countries, 8,500 volunteers and 10,000 visitors from all over the world, gathered in one of the the world’s biggest and most successful events spreading the message “Spirit of Unity”. Thousands of young people joined the R.S.I. workshops with amazing enthusiasm. Among the distinguished visitors we were honoured by the presence of Mr. Ahmad Alhendawi, United Nations Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, the successor of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and His Excellency Mr. Faisal Bin Muaammar, Secretary-General of the KAICIID – International Dialogue Centre, who all expressed their interest in our activities.
RSI’s workshops took place as part of the GDV (Global Development Village), and the objectives were: 1.Training and information and 2.Primary research. In the context of the global initiative “Scouting for Global Road Safety”, young people from all over the world, participated in activities and workshops designed by R.S.I. such as the alco-goggles simulating conditions under the influence of alcohol, as well as applications related to speeding, seat belt use, distraction of attention and the risk of mobile phone use or texting while driving. The road safety HiViz vests, worn by participants, were a striking feature of the event as they explored the key issues of road safety.
During another interesting interactive activity, the “Walking Debate”, young participants were asked to express their opinion about road safety issues. The results were enlightening for the participants and also gave a valuable feedback for the R.S.I. experts, as many controversial and old fashioned attitudes emerged, for example the belief that someone can drive even after the consumption of a small amount of alcohol and the acceptance of aggressive driving in some countries. All these insights were recorded and confirmed in relevant questionnaires that were completed by the scouts.
The initiative at the Jamboree was crowned with a moving ”Joining hands for Road Safety” ceremony, with young people from every nation standing solemnly in solidarity with their brothers and sisters from around the world, and pledging their commitment to road safety.
The Road Safety Institute (RSI)“Panos Mylonas” Mrs Vassiliki Danelli-Mylona, Steven Carey Head of Contingent of Scouting Ireland and João Gonzales from the World Scout Committee addressed the Scouts representing the 120 different countries.
The President of RSI also presented the video message from UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Jean Todt, recorded in support of the Road Safety Institute, the World Scout Jamboree and the Joining Hands for Road Safety event.
The R.S.I. team consisted of Mrs. Vassiliki Danelli-Mylonas (President of R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas”), Scouts and volunteers Marianna Delikaterini, Alexia Kondyliou, Aris Kopanakis, Savvas Kotrides, George Mylonas, Pantelis Rellas, Maria Fountedakis ( Scouts of Greece), and also Grace Lawlor (Ireland), Brian Conville Conor Flanagan, Ciara Keegan and (Scouting Ireland), and from the International Service Team Katrin Ekstrom (IST, Sweden), Dexter Tahara (US), and Vincent Lum (IST, Malaysia).
The overall experience, in combination with the enthusiastic response of the young people, encourages us to continue our efforts with a renewed commitment. We must never forget that road accidents are the primary death cause for people aged 15-29 years old globally. R.S.I., holding Consultative Status with the U.N. ECOSOC for road safety and youth, was delighted to have this challenging opportunity at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree to increase road safety awareness for youth in the world and to gather important behavioral attitudinal research and thus to continue the fight, for a better world without road crashes.
