Through AVENUE (Actions for Vulnerable, Elderly, Novice drivers and road Users in Europe – for traffic safety) Road Safety Institute “Panos Mylonas” and 12 partners from 9 EU countries have undertaken the task of developing referral centres for road safety and actions for citizens.
4 types of referral centres for road safety, called NESTs (Networks & Education for Safety in Traffic), have been developed:
European NEST:
This internet website will be a reference point for initiating pan European campaign, educational courses and other actions based on best practices as well as be a reference for the discussion of European trends in road safety and influence policies that will have an impact on a European level.
National NEST:
This national Road safety house will be a reference for launching national actions and will also generate guidelines that will take under consideration the unique national characteristics; however based on other Member states’ best practices.
Local NEST:
The local NEST will be a direct tool for applying methodologies and collect results that will take under consideration the local characteristics and customise actions according to local needs. All public will be able to access Road safety information, culture, rules, awareness campaigns, as well as to try new or best awareness tools and simulators.

MOBILE NEST:
The mobile NEST will offer a wide coverage on a cost effective. Indeed, this mobile Road safety house will bring high quality material and trainings to the institutions that cannot afford it.
The NESTs disseminate and implement work done in previous EU projects, while being the “heart” of interaction for road safety. Guidelines, evaluation and dissemination aim to lead to EU wide implementation.
Using the NESTs as a foundation, the project organizes actions for citizens, putting emphasis on vulnerable road users, elderly and novice drivers, through the creation of trainings, interaction and high quality campaigns and events to influence the behaviour in a sustainable manner. An active involvement and collaboration of road safety professionals and motivated volunteers will ensure cost effectiveness of the interventions.
AVENUE operates in 8 European countries, with a wide geographical coverage of Europe as well as a wide variety in socioeconomic environment and road safe cultures. Some participating countries have made significant progress towards reducing accidents and fatalities, some have made average progress while a few have made little progress, for which countries we expect to have a higher and measurable impact.
AVENUE Objectives:
- Promote the Road Safety NESTs
- Raise road safety awareness for all
- Reduce road accidents and fatalities within the Europe
- Promote safe driving and courtesy on the road
