National NEST Equipment

The standard setup of equipment has been decided. RSI has ordered or inendeding to order soon following equipment:

Roll Over Car

The "roll over car" has the capability to perform a rolling movement of 360 degrees around its longitudinal axis and also stay upside down in order to demonstrate to the driver the lifesaving properties of the seatbelt, even during slow rotation, nevertheless during a real accident that involves more violent rotation and deformation of the car.

During the process the driver and passengers take place inside the car and fasten their seatbelt. During the activity, the participants realize the importance of wearing the seatbelt and clearly understand that it can avoid them to be seriously injured or thrown out of the car from the car.

There are many advantages with this car: learning through the action in an experiential and emotionally involving way, which is more effective than a long speech. The car is also attractive and entertaining: even spectators are aware of the relevance of wearing the seatbelt.

There are very few companies providing this as a standardised product. Many solutions are custom made according to client requirement and the availability of a spare car for use in the construction.

Child seat training  installation

Parents have to be educated regarding the use of the child safety seat and also train parents in the installation process. The difficulties in child seat installation are a major reason for parents not using child seats.
Two configurations have been implemented so far. 
  • One car body without moving parts, wheels, doors and windows, in order to allow people to watch it effectively from all sides. The car frame can be fitted with wheelies in order to manipulate its position in the space. This configuration has the disadvantage of high cost and the fixed nature of it. It has the significant advantage that it is a real car cabin with most of the restrictions regarding limited space and visibility for the person installing the child seat 
  • One standalone car seat on a frame. While this is a chap solution it has also the advantage of mobility in case that the same equipment will be used as fixed and mobile. It has the disadvantage than unlike the full car cabin, it is easier to manipulate the child seat than in real conditions.

Driving simulator

Driving simulator is a high technology piece of equipment where drivers can be trained in safe driving. The simulators have several programmes simulating normal conditions, difficult conditions, different weather conditions, unexpected events and other high risk factors. They also have the ability to simulate drink driving behaviour. These conditions are simulated in a safe and controlled way which is time and money efficient. Some conditions are almost impossible or too expensive to simulate in real life.
Simulators are very popular among young drivers, because of their resemblance to video games (however their difference with video games has to be clear to drivers)

There are several companies selling driving simulators. The training approach is very much dependent on the scenario approach implemented in the driving simulator software. Therefore we recommend to have an on hands trial of all candidate models before choosing one, and if you use more than one simulators, all of them should be using the same software.

Collision weight scales

Collision weigh demonstrates the force on tthe driver in weight in the car during the collision with various speeds. The trainees weight themselves and can compare their normal weigh with the weight during a collision with 30-120 km/h. The weight of a passenger can reachseveral tones during a collision, while a mobile phone can weight several kilos, demonstrating the danger of having loose objects in the car.

Alcohol goggles

The special goggles distort the vision in a similar way to being under the influence of alcohol or substances. It is a fun way to educate young drivers for the dangers of drunk driving. 

It is a widely used evidence-based prevention tool, used to educate people of all ages about the consequences of alcohol misuse and abuse. The Goggles use special lens technology that allows the wearer to experience a realistic simulation of impairment. This combined with a fun task navigating through cones, or walking on a straight line has been proven very effective.

In the aim to make young people understand how alcohol can affect vision without even realizing it, the volunteers display their Alco Goggles and draw a small course with cones, which enables young people to better understand the different effects of impaired driving. People are zigzagging, making uncertain moves, stepping aside, knocking over the cones… realizing, by seeing through the goggles, the effects of drinking alcohol.

The effects of alcohol on the body are often underestimated:

  • Alteration of the vision (visibility drops)
  • Alteration of movements
  • Alteration of the reflexes
  • Alteration of the behaviour
  • Difficulty of recognition
  • Bad estimation of elements such as speed, distance, etc..., which you need to drive carefully and to be responsible 
  • Feeling invulnerable, the best one and then taking useless risks 

The “Alcohol-Goggles are used to show what the eyes perceive when somebody is under the influence of alcohol. The consequences of this “impaired” vision are significant: loss of balance, bad estimation of distances and speed, double vision etc…

Different types of goggles are available to make the exercise even more efficient:
  • The first one simulates a blood alcohol level between 0,7‰ and 1,0‰ (approximately 4 biers) 
  • A second one simulates a blood alcohol level between 1,7‰ and 2,0‰ (from 6 to 8 glass of alcohol)
  • And a third one simulates a blood alcohol level higher than 2,5‰ (more than enough)

A night version conditions the user to a dark environment. This night situation is the accurate reproduction of weekend nights, which are usually the most killing nights of the week.

Attention distraction

Attention distraction is one of the most serious and also growing problems with road safety. An attention distraction game can help people realise how much their attention is affected by the use of mobile phone and other activities (GPS, radio, gadgets etc.). 

The simple shape and colour matching game helps demonstrate in a fun and engaging way the impact of distractions on our reaction time and judgment and extends the lesson to the impact of distracted driving. Distractions cause a “tunnel vision” effect that pulls our focus away from the critical tasks of driving a motor vehicle. Playing the game is simple; participants match shapes, but not colours as they race against the clock showing the dramatic impact of distraction on our ability to play the game. Participants typically experience difficulties in speaking, thinking clearly and performing the given task.

Reflective materials and visibility demostration


A stand that shows different kinds of reflective materials, what they are made of and how they react in different lights. Thorough equipment it is also demonstrated the differences in visibility between wearing and not wearing reflective materials

Egg helmets

Small helmets (egg helmet) demonstrate the results of not wearing helmets while riding a bicycle or motorcycle. Usually for the purposes of demonstration boiled eggs are used to show children the results of not wearing the helmets.
