National Road Safety Week
The Road Safety Institute "Panos Mylonas" (RSI) in collaboration with the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (HITE) organized the annual National Road Safety Week (16-23 March) for the fifth consecutive year. Activities and events held throughout Greece, to raise awareness activate citizens on road safety issues and "Courtesy on the Road." This year the RSI "Panos Mylonas" and HITE coordinated more than 150 organizations throughout Greece. Among these, Academic Institutions, Traffic Departments, Municipalities and Municipal Police Training Centres in Schools Army and the Armed Forces, Private and Public Schools at all levels, Sports Clubs, Associations automobile and motorcycle collection for Accident Prevention, Parents Associations, Cultural Institutions organized parallel events and activities to raise awareness throughout Greece.
The program of the Road Safety Week was as follows:
• 5th Regional Road Safety Day in western Greece in Rio - Antirion on March 22. Representatives of Local Government in Western Greece, the academic community of University of Patras (UPatras AVENUE Partner) and the Greek Institute of Transportation Engineers were present. The Mobile Traffic Safety Unit (NEST) hosted in Rio Antirio for 4 days, where visitors from schools, voluntary organizations and local citizens had the opportunity to participate in experiential training of RSI "Panos Mylonas". Western Greece and surrounding areas are a cross road for high risk sites.
Advanced Driving Simulator
• Campaign European Day of Courtesy on the Road and Safety Day for Greek Motorways on March 22. All highways participated in distributing the leaflet for Courtesy on the road and respective driving behaviour through all toll stations in the country. The campaign reached more than 1,500,000 of our fellow citizens and supported by the 'Alliance for Security and Culture on the Road "that RSI took the initiative and coordinates private companies committing to the goal of improving road safety in the country. There was also significant contribution from all 150 collaborating organizations over Greece (schools, municipalities and county councils, sections traffic police etc) as well as all Motorway management companies. (Aegean Motorway, Attiki Odos, the Rio-Antirio bridge, Egnatia Odos, Moreas, New Central Street, Olympia Odos as well as the Fund of National Highways).
• The Institute in cooperation with the Greek Police, organized for the fifth year the awards ceremony for the "Traffic Policeman of the Year" and presented the results of his program to "speed management" implemented in Lavrion Avenues and Marathon-based research Protocol TRL (Transport Research Laboratory) of the UK Traffic and coordination of RSI This pilot program was based on a protocol developed by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and led to a dramatic decrease of 50% of fatal and serious accidents were recorded during 18 months from the application to control the speed as well. The event of the award of "traffic policeman of the Year" was held on 20 March 2012 at the National Reference Centre for Road Safety »(NEST), the presence of the Minister of Citizen Protection. The winners received an honorary award and their respective Alcohol Traffic Department as supporting tools for their efforts to reduce and prevent road accidents.
• The National Night Without Accident organized in collaboration with nightclubs in Athens and Patras on Saturday 24 March.
